Dr. Roy A. Chessmore Scholarship

Dr. Roy A. Chessmore Scholarship was funded by a grant from the trustees of the Kerr Foundation in honor of Dr. Roy A. Chessmore’s lifelong work with farm families in southern and southeastern Oklahoma.  Dr. Chessmore was particularly active in the area of pasture management.  Roy was born September 23, 1913, on a farm near Oklahoma City.  The family later moved to a farm north of Stillwater.  Roy graduated from Oklahoma A & M College with a B. S. degree in Field Crops in 1941.  He was active in the Agronomy Club, Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Zeta, was a member of the Crops Judging Team, and was an honor student throughout his college career.  Roy served in the U. S. Army Air Force in World War II and then came back to Oklahoma A & M to get his M. S. in Field Crops in 1948.  Roy then went to the University of Nebraska where he received his Ph.D. degree in Plant Breeding and Pasture Management in 1952.  Dr. Chessmore has always been interested in farming, farm people, and the youth of our state.  He dedicated his life’s work to improving Oklahoma Agriculture, which in turn worked for the betterment of people in all walks of life in our state.  Dr. Chessmore resigned in 1952 to accept a position as Plant Breeder at the Noble Foundation in Ardmore.  He was awarded the Master Professional Agronomist in 1966.

This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student in plant and soil sciences whose area of study is forage management or soil sciences.
