Melvin and Mary Jones President’s Distinguished Scholarship

Melvin and Mary Jones President’s Distinguished Scholarship was established in 1975.  Melvin Jones was born near Boswell, Ok on May 29, 1921, the seventh child in a family of nine children.  The family moved to a rented farm near Purcell in McClain County.  Melvin received his B. S. in Agronomy from Oklahoma A & M in 1942, his M. S. in Agronomy at Oklahoma State University in 1943, and his Ph. D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics at the University of Nebraska in 1945 at the age of 24.  Melvin Jones is an eminent Oklahoma philanthropist who had enjoyed success as an educator, an author, a scientist, a diplomat, and business executive.

This $2,200 scholarship is renewable for four years.  It is awarded to an incoming freshman enrolled as a full-time student in plant and soil sciences.
