PaSS Degree Options

Plant and Soil Sciences Options for 2008-2009

There are seven (7) options of emphasis within Plant and Soil Sciences each provides a common background in basic plant or soil science with an area of specialization that allows a student to create a unique path of study.

Bioenergy Production
Students will be prepared for exciting careers in the emerging bioenergy industry by learning about agronomic practices associated with producing fuel, food, feed and fiber.  Upon completion of the program, students will meet course requirements for:

  • Professional Certified Crop Advisor
  • Minor in Entomology

Agribusiness
This option is for students who have a desire to balance their education between technical understanding of the agronomic industry and business application.  They will be able to pursue careers in consulting, sales or agribusiness management.

  • Earned a minor in Agricultural Economics

Forage and Livestock Production
This is for students interested in livestock production with an emphasis in forage production.  Students in this option will be prepared for many areas of the livestock industry, agriculture extension, and agricultural business.

  • Qualify for a minor in Animal Science

Plant Science
Students will learn about plant physiology, crop management and plant genetics.  Upon completion of this option the student will be prepared for graduate school or a career in seed production industry, chemical sales or research.  Additionally, students who choose to pursue this option can complete a minor in:

  • Botany
  • Horticulture

Plant Biotechnology
The Plant Biotechnology option is designed to meet the needs of those students with strong interests in math and science with a focus on plant biology.  These students are prepared of careers in plant biotechnology developing genetics for the next “Green Revolution”.  Students choosing this option have the choice of completing either a minor in:

  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology

Soil and Water Resources
The Soil and Water Resources option is designed to prepare students for a balanced approach in plant science, soil science and water quality.  They will be prepared for consulting in nutrient management issues and crop production.  Their training in water quality and quantity will provide a link to many pollution issues related to soil conservation and land management.  A student who completes this will meet the minimum course requirements of:

  • The national register as a soil scientist for USDA-NRCS
  • Certified professional soil scientist

Soil Geotechnology
Soil Geotechnology will direct students towards a career in environmental consulting and remediation.  It is designed for students with an interest in urban aspects of soil science.  Students trained in this option will have a strong background in geology, biology and chemistry.

  • Earn a minor in Geology
