Variety Trials

Choosing which variety or varieties to plant is a crucial but complex piece of any crop production system and is influenced by a number of factors. The objective of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences Variety Testing Programs is to develop comprehensive and unbiased information about the adaptability and performance of varieties when grown under Oklahoma’s diverse production environments.

Each year, the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences Variety Testing Programs use replicated field trials at multiple locations that represent major production regions in Oklahoma to determine cultivar suitability. Depending on the crop and specific test, information that may be reported includes comparative yields, reactions to pests (diseases and insects), crop quality characteristics, date of maturity, severity of lodging, and shattering resistance.
