Cowboys vs. Cancer

The Cowboys vs. Cancer team and the Sherrer Squad would like to thank everyone for their great support in the recent American Cancer Society fund raising drive in honor of Gary Sherrer.
Thanks to your generosity we passed our goal of $1,000 donated to the American Cancer Society. This money will go a long way in the ongoing teaching, research, and extension work needed to battle cancer.

Daniel Edmonds and Shirley Vincent were recently honored at the 26th Annual Phoenix Awards with the highest awards given to graduate students by Oklahoma State University’s Graduate and Professional Student Government Association and the Graduate College. |

OSU Student Employee of the Year announced

Yesterday, the OSU Student Employee of the Year was announced in a very nice reception opened by Dr. Marlene Strathe and Mr. Gary Clark. Plant and Soil Sciences student employee Katy Brookman was one of six finalists for the award.
Unfortunately, Katy was not selected employee of the year. However, she remains #1 to all of us here in PaSS! She did come away with a nice certificate and a basket of goodies. Ruth Mudrock, OSU Library received the 2008 OSU Student Employee of the Year Award. |

Plant and Soil Sciences M.S. student receives the Phoenix Award

Oklahoma State University student Savannah Smith of Talihina has been awarded a Morris K. Udall Foundation Scholarship for her senior year.

| Savannah is the sixth OSU student ever to receive this scholarship. Although Savannah is majoring in Environmental Science, we in Plant and Soil Sciences consider her one of our own. The OSU Agronomy Club hosted the 2008 Students of Agronomy, Soils and Environmental Sciences (SASES) Northern Regional meeting in Stillwater over the weekend (April 5-6, 2008).

Over 120 students and their club advisors participated in the event. Universities represented included:

University of Wisconsin-River Falls
University of Nebraska-Lincoln
North Dakota State University
Oklahoma State University
Murray State University
Fort Hays State University
SASES is an undergraduate student organization of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America. It is composed of chapters located at colleges and universities that provide a curriculum in agronomy, crops, soils and environmental sciences. A variety of programs and activities are offered on the local and national level for students to become professionally involved and to prepare for their future careers.
The meeting was a HUGE success! Special thanks go to Dr. Redfearn, Dr. Hattey, Janet Rich, Brad Clayton, Josh Bushong, Amber Brewe, Cody Massey, Matt Braun, Billie McKean, Jerry May, and the entire Agronomy Club.

PaSS graduate student Heidi West is a winner of an Annie’s Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship!

This $2,500 scholarship from Annie’s Homegrown is part of a total of $50,000 in scholarship assistance awarded each year to some very deserving students. Please see information below and website for more information.
Adelheid (Heidi) E. West earned a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in Studio Art from OSU in 2006. She is currently a MS student studying under Dr. Chad Penn examining the potential use of short-rotation woody crops in combination with agronomic crops to remediate animal waste lagoons. The objectives are to characterize the sludge; evaluate the use of short rotation woody species and cover crops as potential candidates for P phytoremediation based on sludge layer root penetration, P uptake and allocation; and evaluate the potential for carbon sequestration of encased sludge layer compared to traditional surface sludge applications. more...
