Morris native named OSU Outstanding Master's Student

STILLWATER, Okla. – Morris native Daniel Edmonds was named Oklahoma State University’s Outstanding Master’s Student at the university’s 26th Annual Phoenix Awards ceremonies.

The Phoenix Award recognizes exemplary achievement in leadership, scholarship, professional involvement and university and community service.

A 2002 graduate of Morris High School, Edmonds said it was a privilege to bring recognition to OSU’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

“Being selected to receive this award is due in large part to the quality education, experiences and opportunities presented to me as a graduate student in the department of plant and soil sciences,” Edmonds said.

Edmonds is a former DASNR Agricultural Legislative Intern, and has considered it to be part of his responsibilities to perform the role of “ambassador” for both the division and university ever since his 2006 legislative experience.

“I take pride in extending education, research and technologies developed at OSU, whether it is in Zimbabwe, Uzbekistan or right here in Oklahoma,” Edmonds said, citing a few of the many knowledge-and-technology transfer opportunities he has been a part of through his affiliation with DASNR.

He is the first master’s student from the OSU department of plant and soil sciences to receive the Phoenix Award, and only the third DASNR graduate student to be so honored.

“Daniel is truly remarkable, a shining example of what an individual can achieve through hard work and determination,” said Dave Porter, head of OSU’s department of plant and soil sciences. “His selection is an extraordinary honor that brings us all great pride and joy.”

The son of David and Carolyn Edmonds of Morris, he is as strong a supporter of DASNR as one can find. Edmonds earned his bachelor’s degree as an OSU plant and soil sciences major. He is finishing up his master’s degree as a graduate student in the department. He is looking forward to continuing his “role as an ambassador” while pursuing a doctoral degree in the department.

“Daniel has already made his mark, but I’m confident that we’re going to continue hearing great things about Daniel in the future,” Porter said.

Each spring, the Graduate and Professional Student Government Association selects an outstanding master’s student, doctoral student and faculty member to present with its highest honor: the Phoenix Award.

Student recipients each receive a $750 monetary award from the GPSGA and the OSU Graduate College. Winners also have their names engraved on the Phoenix Award plaques on display outside the Graduate College offices in Whitehurst Hall on OSU’s Stillwater campus.
