Activities
Extension Activities: 1991-present
Provide leadership in the development of educational programs for forage legume production with emphasis on:
-
Alfalfa in central and west parts of the state and
-
Clovers in eastern pastures.
Educational programs include development of:
-
Profitable forage production presentations
-
Support for forage producer groups.
Research Activities: 1977-present
Direct an alfalfa breeding and management program designed to develop improved multiple-pest resistant alfalfa cultivars and IPM practices. Leader for farming systems approach for the development of sustainable alfalfa production. Initiated "Agroecosystem Approach to Pasture Production", aimed at using clovers to enhance forage quality and yield.
Alfalfa Breeding concentrates on:
-
Enhancement of germplasm with resistance to important alfalfa pests and tolerance grazing.
-
Evaluation alfalfas cultivars from the OSU program as well as other public and private programs for forage yield potential, persistence during grazing, and resistance to pests.
Alfalfa Management research emphasizes on:
-
Evaluation of alfalfa production practices that economically impact yield, forage quality, and persistence.
-
Development of integrated management systems to minimize production losses and optimize forage yield.
Pasture Production research includes activities related to development of sustainable agroecosystem using legumes and rotational stocking to enhance forage quality and yield.
International Longterm Overseas Activities
1987-1988. Resident Advisor, Agricultural Technology Transfer Tunisia. Coordinated all in-country activity for USAID/MIAC project. University of Missouri - Lead University.
1971-77. Developed a barley breeding project in Morocco with major emphasis on selection for disease and lodging resistance; screened thousands of barley lines and populations for resistance to powdery mildew, net blotch, stripe rust, and lodging.
